Essential Question: How does lip balm work?
Lip balm is a wax-like substance applied topically to the lips of the mouth to moisturize and relieve chapped or dry lips, angular cheilitis, stomatitis, or cold sores. Lip balm often contains beeswax or carnauba wax, camphor, cetyl alcohol, lanolin, paraffin, and petrolatum, among other ingredients. Beeswax is a natural compound secreted by female bees that is often used in cosmetics, particularly lip balm. This substance is very moisturizing, can help protect the lips from the harmful rays of the sun, and has a pleasant smell. It can also help prevent infections and cold sores. The primary purpose of lip balm is to provide an occlusive layer on the lip surface to seal moisture in lips and protect them from external exposure. Dry air, cold temperatures, and wind all have a drying effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body. Lips are particularly vulnerable because the skin is so thin, and thus they are often the first to present signs of dryness.
Reflection:
I thought that this lab worked really well because my lip balm turned out just right! I decided to make two, one for me and one for my sister and we both love it. I am happy with the results because I just made myself amazing chap stick that I am going to use everyday especially because I use chap stick a lot.
I knew that I got the perfect results because my chap stick turned out looking like lip balm and it smelled like it too. I think I got the desired results because I got specific information from many different sources online that other people used that gave them different tips and from other peoples experience. I kind of wished I would have melted old lipstick that I don't use anymore to make my lip balm a different color.
I worked with my friends Ivy and Carmina for this lab. I feel that we all worked pretty efficiently because we were actually able to get our work done pretty quickly by following instructions from the proposal we wrote. I've looked on other peoples blog posts about their lip balm in the past and that helped us make ours a lot better because some of the blogs told us what to do and what not to do based off of their experience.
I think we succeeded on this lab and I wouldn't really change any way that we did. Everything was running smoothly and perfectly. Although, it would be nice to have a cleaner and bigger space to work around. I felt that how we set up the work space and where we had set it up made me feel like I just had to clean the entire table off, but I managed to be able to work within the small space that was given to me safely and clean up afterwards. I would definitely like to do this project again because I thought this project was a great success.
